Our Story

The house is from 1854. The kitchen is just getting started.

The brownstone at 32 Dove Street was built in 1854 — before the Capitol, before the traffic lights, before takeout. Houses like this were made for gathering, and this one never really stopped.

The Timeline

How a brownstone becomes a bar + kitchen.

  1. 1854

    The house goes up

Albany is a canal-and-rail boomtown; Dove Street fills in with brownstones built to last. Number 32 gets thick walls, tall windows, and a front stoop made for lingering.

  2. 1900s

    The neighborhood century

Center Square grows around the house — generations of Albanians live, work, argue, and celebrate within these walls while the city changes outside them.

  3. 2018

Dove + Deer opens its doors

The house becomes a table for everyone. We restored the wood, kept the bones, and built a kitchen that takes pub food seriously — local beef, real technique, vegetables treated like headliners.

  4. Today

Albany's favorite neighborhood bar + kitchen

Lunch through Dove After Dark, seven days of service, a drink named after the year the house went up — and Don at the door, tail wagging, taking his hosting duties very seriously.

"The lights are warm, the food is honest."

The Kitchen

Pub fare, crafted.

We cook the food pubs were always meant to serve, made with more care than they usually got: Kilcoyne Farms beef in the smash burger, buttermilk fried chicken with comeback sauce, kung pao Brussels sprouts that out-order the wings some nights.

The taps pour New York first — Nine Pin, Utica Club, Beer Tree — and the cocktail list reads like the house's diary: the 1854, the Dewitt, The Grocer.

The Host

Meet Don.

Every good neighborhood spot has a regular who acts like they own the place. Ours actually kind of does. Don is our resident good boy, occasional patio inspector, and the most followed member of the staff.
